Support the BCT with Online Donations! The BCTrust, like most non-profit organizations, depends on donations. Now we've made it easier for you to support us using our secure online donation page. Click here to help us preserve and protect Boxborough's undeveloped land! The Trust works with private land owners to facilitate land acquisition; we contribute to land conservation purchases and we educate residents about the benefits of land conservation by sponsoring lectures, hikes, and through our work with the Blanchard Memorial Elementary School on conservation related projects. All of these endeavors require a substantial amount of capital and hours of volunteer time. Please help us with your continued financial support. |
BCTrust Board Supports Conservation of Flagg Hill
As a non-profit land conservation organization, our mission is to protect Boxborough’s open space and undeveloped land, and we support the conversion. BCTrust board members walked the municipal portion of Flagg Hill and concurred with the town Conservation Commission’s assessment that the land has high conservation value. Although the Board of Selectmen’s suggestion to sell part of the municipal portion for residential development might have fiscal merit, the board concluded that protecting Flagg Hill’s natural resources would be of greater service to the town. The BCTrust strongly urges all residents to walk the municipal area of Flagg Hill in preparation for STM, which will be held on the first night of the Annual Town Meeting, beginning at 7 pm in the Blanchard Memorial Elementary School auditorium. The Friends of Flagg Hill, the citizens group that petitioned to have this issue voted on by STM, will be hosting walks at Flagg Hill on several weekends leading up to May 12. Private Wells Depend on Boxborough’s groundwater resources were the focus of the BCTrust’s annual meeting presentation in March. The featured speaker, Dr. Tom Phelan, is an engineer and hydrogeologist with Geosyntec Consultants in Acton who specializes in the remediation of groundwater contamination for business and industry. In his presentation, Tom talked about the significance of groundwater for homeowners in Boxborough, where we all have private wells. Tom began his talk with some basic information about hydrogeology and groundwater. Hydrogeology deals with the distribution and movement of water in these earth materials through pore spaces between sediment grains and in fractures, which are open cracks in rocks. Groundwater is potable, extractable water in near-surface rock or sediment. Less than 1% of the 370 quintillion (370 plus 18 zeros) gallons of water on Earth is available as groundwater. (Most of our planet’s water – about 97% – is in the oceans.) The average time a water molecule spends in groundwater may range upward of 100 to 200 years – the time it takes for a drop of rain, for example, to infiltrate the land surface until it is pumped out in someone’s well or flows out from a natural spring. However, this is only an average, and the time may be much shorter – months or years, depending on the local conditions Continue reading the article here.
